talks to the cows

The Chicago News Cow of 1999 proudly displaying in his case copies of The Jungle along with Cliff Notes for the novel, in order to help the denisezs of Chicago better understand their history.

A little over a year ago I was sleeping peacefully one night when my ancestor Upton came to me in a dream and said to me, "Urban, I'm hearing that the cows are coming back to Chicago. I just don't understand it. Good god, we killed millions of their ancestors, the industry around them created untold (though Lord knows I tried) hardship and sorrow for millions of human lives. And now, they're gonna come parading back into town all gussied and dressed up and colorful and supposedly happy. I'm missing something here, Urban. You get yourself out there and talk to them cows. Find out what the heck is going on. I want to know. And only you can get the answer for me."

Well, I must say it was a strange dream. At the time I hadn't yet even heard about the herd of 300 plus "art cows" that would be displayed all over Chicago during the summer of 1999. But oh, was I ever to learn. I went out and talked to them all right. You can read what I heard and learned. I'm sure it will be as illuminating for you as it is for me.

Then I heard that this summer they (the cows) were going to New York and a couple of other cities out east. I'm not quite sure whether this is more strange or less strange than the Chicago display. So I decided I better go east young man and and get the story straight from the hors. . .er, cow's mouth. As the summer of 2000 marches on, we'll be archiving my Chicago interviews and adding the new stories from the New York herd. If what they have to say is half as interesting as their Chicago counterparts, it promises to be another remarkable summer.

Picking up where I left off last year, this is Urban Sinclair reporting.
